So … I guess summer wasn’t quite finished with us just yet.

It needs to be a rule that once football season is officially here, it can’t be any higher than 70 degrees at kickoff. Who do I need to speak to about this?

Am I still looking forward to another Friday night on the sidelines? Absolutely. Am I looking forward to sweating and feeling miserable? Absolutely not.

I can only imagine how the players will feel.

Two weeks in the books. Here are this week’s Power Rankings.

10. Waterford (2-0)

Week 2 Result: 15-8 win over Caldwell

Previous Ranking: 10 … —

Week 2 wasn’t as easy of a week for Waterford. But the end result remained the same … a win in its back pocket. This team just figures it out and gets the job done at any cost. It’s these types of games, low-scoring, offensive struggles that showcase what your team is made of.

9. Symmes Valley (2-0)

Week 2 Result: 55-14 win over Meigs

Double nickel … again. Opposing secondaries be warned, you’re in for a long night and a lot of reps when you line up against the Vikings. They play an exciting brand of football, let the ball fly and that sets up the run game. Usually, it’s the opposite. But their formula has them winning games, convincingly.

8. Miami Trace (1-1)

Week 2 Result: 35-7 loss to Wilmington

Previous Ranking: 5 … -3

Tough night at the office. The Panthers scored first and had a lead going into the second quarter, until they no longer did. It’s not the type of performance they anticipated, but the good part is that there’s still eight weeks left in the season. They’ll aim to rebound with a trip to Logan Elm.

7. West (2-0)

Week 2 Result: 42-0 win over Portsmouth

There was no late game dramatics or fireworks, it was a beatdown from beginning to end. The good part for the Senators is that multiple players got game action, meaning players started fresh and got to see their teammates thrive. It won’t be that easy this time around as they invade the Township for a showdown with Huntington.

6. Zane Trace (2-0)

Week 2 Result: 27-7 win over Waverly

Previous Ranking: 7 … +1

Another Friday night of Brice Johnson running like he’s never going to play another down of football again. Does anyone run more angry than he does? Revenge is the name of the game this week with a trip to visit Amanda-Clearcreek on the horizon, who ran all over the Pioneers last season.

5. Nelsonville-York (2-0)

Week 1 Result: 48-6 win over Logan

Previous Ranking: 6 … +1

Four touchdowns in one game is impressive. But four interceptions is nearly impossible … unless your name is Grant Elliott. What a record-breaking night he had last week. Now with a trip to Coal Grove, who is a ground-and-pound program, it’s unlikely a repeat performance will happen.

4. Wheelersburg (1-1)

Week 1 Result: 26-18 loss to Chillicothe

Previous Ranking: 4 … —

In one of the wildest games in recent memory, the Pirates fought hard and nearly got it done against what is possibly the best defense they’ll face this season. But Chillicothe had one too many big plays happen. Give this Pirate team five more weeks to find their form and it’ll be game over.

3. Unioto (3-0)

Week 2 Result: 33-14 win over Athens

Previous Ranking: 2 … -1

Believe it or not, the Shermans trailed at halftime and were held scoreless in the first half. Then they woke up and remembered who they were. The defense came up with three interceptions, the offense scored 26 of their 33 points in the third quarter, and that was enough to turn the lights off.

2. Chillicothe (2-0)

Week 2 Result: 26-18 win over Wheelersburg

Previous Ranking: 3 … +1

Depending on how their season ends, one could argue that the victory over Wheelersburg is one of the top five wins in program history. Cartae Ligon played the game of his life to date, and the Cavaliers’ defensive front seven was incredible. They were vicious, quick off the ball and aggressive. This team could be very special.

1. Ironton (2-0)

Week 2 Result: 55-14 win over Salem (N.J.)

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Ironton is what it is … a machine. It is the head of the class of Southeast Ohio and will remain No. 1 until someone beats them. Good luck. It’s way easier said than done. This capsule won’t change anytime soon, and they’re out for revenge all year long.
