With game-winners, losing streaks snapped, upsets, a state championship banner unveiled, and a number of teams moving to 2-0 on the season, Week 2 was indeed one for the history books.
Some teams will continue to look for their first win this season while others look to remain unbeaten. Either way, the competition surely heats up this week.
We’ve heading into Week 3 and before kickoff happens, here are SOSA’s newest edition of Power Rankings.
10. Zane Trace (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 48-0 win over Logan Elm
Previous Ranking: 10 … —
Brice Johnson can’t stop scoring. The Pioneers have thrown the ball four times this season. That’s how effective the junior back and the entire Pioneer rushing attack has been through two weeks. Until someone figures out how to contain ZT, don’t expect the formula to change. Good luck, Amanda-Clearcreek.
9. Athens (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 48-0 win over Paint Valley
Previous Ranking: 9 … —
96 minutes of football played, and not a single point has been surrendered by this Bulldog defense. No matter who you play or what their record is, it showcases a level of focus that is downright impressive. Can they make it three shutouts in a row against a winless Marietta team? It’s very possible.
8. Nelsonville-York (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 46-7 win over Logan
Previous Ranking: 8 … —
There’s stout rushing attacks, and then there’s what Nelsonville-York did against Logan. It’s one thing to have one guy run for over 200 yards, but it’s completely different to have someone else also pile up over 100 yards on the ground. The Buckeyes, in total, ran for 420 yards against the Chieftains. Now they’ll face a similar rushing attack against Coal Grove, looking to stay unbeaten.
7. Piketon (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 50-8 win over Wellston
Previous Ranking: 7 … —
Week 2 got really ugly, really fast for the Golden Rockets. The Redstreaks showed no mercy, scoring early, often and getting their starters off the field in due time. You know Piketon is clicking and cruising when it doesn’t even bother throwing the football. It also helps when Tanner Loar is finding the end zone on an average of every 2 1/2 carries. Valley will be a much stiffer test.
6. Valley (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 47-0 win over Fayetteville
Previous Ranking: 6 … —
Speaking of the Indians, they had a relatively easy night last Friday and were also able to get their starters some rest in a big win over Fayetteville. Two shutouts in a row has this team’s confidence soaring. It’s the program’s first 2-0 start since 2015. The Indians, however, haven’t faced a stout passing attack yet. That’ll surely change against Piketon.

5. Unioto (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 48-8 win over Vinton County
Previous Ranking: 5 … —
Cruising right along are the Shermans, who had little trouble handling Vinton County for the 10th time in the two’s last 11 matchups. Across the board, quite possibly no team has shown more balance offensively. It also helps when you have the athletes in the trenches and outside to do so.
4. Jackson (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 56-3 win over Gallia Academy
Previous Ranking: 4 … —
An old SEOAL rivalry ended with a familiar outcome as the Ironmen had no issues at all in Week 2. Bodhi Wolford was perfect, literally. He was 6-of-6 passing for 156 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to two rushing touchdowns. Performances like that might not be an every game thing for him, but Jackson will need something similar, from someone, to beat Wheelersburg.
3. Miami Trace (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 15-9 win over Wilmington
Previous Ranking: 3 … —
The Panthers trailed for most of this game, but when push came to shove, they clawed back and managed to squeak one out behind a stout fourth quarter defense. Wins like this, early in the season, showcase what type of team you have. Miami Trace has grit, heart and toughness. It’s a dangerous combination.
2. Wheelersburg (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 10-7 win over Archbishop McNicholas
Previous Ranking: 2 … —
No team showed more grit than the Pirates did last week. Despite trailing throughout most of the night, they continued to battle, scoring the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds left, on 4th and goal, to escape with a win. One thing about the Pirates is that they always find a way to get the job done. Now, they’ll travel for a showdown with Jackson in the Apple City.
1. Ironton (2-0)
Week 2 Result: 42-3 win over Liberty Christian (Va.)
Previous Ranking: 1 … —
Is it possible that this Ironton team is better than last year’s state title team? I know we’re only two weeks into the season, but considering how the Tigers just manhandled a defending two-time state champion from Virginia, ending Liberty Christian’s 29-game winning streak, is just downright scary. Something else that’s scary is Kayden Edwards. That kid has the juice, and so do the Tigers. They’re an easy pick for this week’s top spot.
