Deeds named OVC Player of the Year, all-league teams announced

The Ohio Valley Conference released its all-league softball teams on Wednesday.

COAL GROVE — After leading her teammates to a second consecutive district championship, Coal Grove’s Abbie Deeds is reaping the benefits of her spectacular play.

Deeds aided the Hornets to an 18-win season from both the circle and the plate. She hit .333 with 24 runs scored, 24 base hits and 14 RBIs, and was 18-5 in the circle with a 1.35 ERA and 287 strikeouts.

Ironton’s Khamil Martin and South Point’s Kota Copley also earned individual accolades.

Martin is the OVC’s Offensive Player of the Year while Copley earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 25 games, Martin hit .492 with 11 home runs and 25 RBIs. Copley struck out 178 hitters as a freshman and won 14 games in the circle.

Deeds’ skipper, Aaron Rice, was named the OVC’s Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.

Joining Deeds, Martin and Copley on the league’s first-team list are Coal Grove’s Mia Haynes, Izzy Kitts and Kendall Taylor, Ironton’s Aubrey Ferguson and Ava Bihl, South Point’s Adyson Copley and Saratina Jackson, Rock Hill’s Isabelle Melvin and Charlee Long, Portsmouth’s Caitlyn Galloway and Katie Ankrom, Gallia Academy’s Ava Angel and Chloe Bennett, Fairland’s Katie DeHart, and Chesapeake’s KJ Collins.

The honorable mention list includes Coal Grove’s Braelie Hitchcock and Kasey Vanderhoof, Ironton’s Layla Townsend and Braegan Thomas, South Point’s Kaylee Stidham and Josie Kidd, Rock Hill’s Alaina Wilds and Savannah Kidd, Portsmouth’s Madison Boren and Karlee Galloway, Gallia Academy’s Reagan Skidmore and Maggie Davis, Fairland’s Ally Shepherd and Jordan Spencer, and Chesapeake’s Jaeden Anderson and Haylee Legrand.
