CHILLICOTHE — For the last three years, Joey Pfeifer has been a fixture within Southeastern’s athletic programs.
The three-sport athlete has helped each of the school’s football, basketball and baseball programs. And, more specifically, on the diamond, he’s been a huge part of the Panthers’ resurgence.
The Panthers currently sit at 12-8 this spring with two weeks left before the tournament begins. They’re slowly beginning to round into shape with Pfeifer helping to lead the charge.
“We have had outstanding pitching, good defense, and good leadership,” Pfeifer said. “If our team can put together a complete game, I think the sky’s the limit and we can accomplish anything.”
Pfeifer, alongside Carson McWhorter, have formed one of the best 1-2 pitching punches in the SVC, combining for seven of the Panthers’ wins on the hill and totaling 105 strikeouts — Pfeifer accounting for 44 of them.
Anytime either of them are on the mound, the Panthers can be a very dangerous matchup. The chemistry between the duo has only made the team that much stronger.
“It all comes down to confidence,” Pfeifer said. “When we take the mound, regardless of who we play, we know we can hold our opponents to minimal hits and minimal runs, which allows us to be in every game. I feel like when we are on the mound, it gives the team confidence, which leads to our success.”
When he’s not mowing down batters in the box, Pfeifer is diligently working towards his future in the classroom at the Pickaway-Ross Health and Technology Center.
Pfeifer is studying electrical technology, an area he’s been fascinated with, in large part, thanks to his dad.
“My dad works in trade work and I plan on pursuing a job in his line of work,” Pfeifer said. “I’m specializing in electrical technology and Pickaway-Ross has helped me learn the basics in that line of work, which will give me a jump start to my career.”
Balancing academics and an active sports career is tough. But for Pfeifer, it’s no different than pitch and catch.
More importantly, he’s getting an early head start in a field he knows he wants to be in. Pickaway-Ross has given him the tools to get started.
“If anyone has an interest in any of the programs that Pickaway-Ross offers, I would highly recommend they go to Pickaway-Ross, so they can get a head start in their career.”
