COLUMBUS — While multiple athletes competed in Friday’s OHSAA Track and Field State Championships, two took center stage.

Paint Valley senior Cole Miller and Valley senior Justin Moore each took home Division III state championship medals.

Miller did so in the long jump with a mark of 23-feet-5.5 while Moore won the shot put with a heave of 62-feet-10.5.

Each completely dominated their competition. Miller logged a jump of 23-4.25 on his fifth attempt, a distance that would’ve also won the state championship. Moore’s title throw came on his sixth and final attempt. However, his fifth attempt — 61-1.5 — would’ve also won the crown.

For good measure, Moore also took fourth place in the discus throw with a mark of 169-feet-9.

Here’s a rundown of each area athlete’s finishes on Day 1 of the state championship meet.

DIVISION II

Minford’s Luke Rader finished on the podium, placing sixth in the long jump with a mark of 21-9.5, Zane Trace’s Spencer Brower took home seventh in the shot put at 55-8, and Unioto’s 4×800-meter relay of Caden Larue, Ashton Beverly, JJ Larue and Turner Markko finished sixth with a finish time of 8:02.47.

Zane Trace’s Kendra Detillion placed 13th in the discus (110-10), Wheelersburg’s Gracie Perkins was ninth in the high jump (5-2) and Unioto’s 4×800 relay of Cameron Walker, Ava Rooker, Briana Nelson and Gwyn Eldridge placed 18th (10:25.89).

DIVISION III

Rock Hill’s Izaak Cox finished second in the long jump, directly behind Miller, with a mark of 23-0.25 while Adena’s Sydney Foglesong ended her career with yet another strong finish in the discus throw and shot put, taking home a third place finish in the shot with a throw of 129-1 and a fourth place showing in the discus at 40-10.50.

Huntington’s Ryan Marion was 12th in the shot put (47-4.5), Coal Grove’s Dustin Lunsford was 16th in the shot put (45-11.25) and Adena’s Claire Robinson was 11th in the pole vault (10-4).
