The way the season is beginning to unfold, Weeks 9 and 10 are shaping up to be conference championship games.
Sometimes, that’s how the cookie crumbles. But it makes things all the more exciting when it’s you’re playing for both conference supremacy and playoff positioning. There’s a different feel in the air.
That’s sort of how it’ll be in Kinnikinnick on Friday. That, undoubtedly, is the hottest ticket in town and understandably so.
Cheers to Week 7. Here are this week’s Power Rankings.
1. Ironton (6-0)
Last Week: 1 … —
Week 6 Result: 62-0 win over Chesapeake
Ironton ran 17 plays in the first half. Now typically when that happens, it’s three-and-out after another, or a series of turnovers happened. Not exactly. The Tigers’ offense simply scored in a couple of plays, then the defense followed suit in a dominant performance. They scored all 62 points in the first half. Just insane.
2. Jackson (4-2)
Last Week: 2 … —
Week 6 Result: 49-28 win over Miami Trace
While I’m sure Jackson would like to play cleaner football, and not commit turnovers, as long as there’s a ‘W’ at the end of the game, that’s all that matters. The Ironmen are slowly beginning to find that swagger and edge they played with towards the end of last season That’s a bad sign for the rest of the FAC and Division III.
3. Chillicothe (5-1)
Last Week: 3 … —
Week 6 Result: 50-14 win over McClain
While most teams attempt to establish the run, the Cavaliers decided to air it out against McClain. It’s a move that paid off huge dividends and helped them rack up another victory to inch closer to a potential FAC title. Don’t get caught looking ahead to next week though. Miami Trace can score and is primed to pull off an upset.
4. Wheelersburg (4-2)
Last Week: 4 … —
Week 6 Result: 42-0 win over Minford
There wasn’t anything special about the Pirates’ performance last week. It was simple. Just hand the ball off, run over defenders and find the end zone. They did just that … six times … and served a reminder as to who the SOC still runs through. It’s unlikely that recipe for success changes this week as Oak Hill comes to town.
5. Washington (5-1)
Last Week: 5 … —
Week 6 Result: 42-0 win over Hillsboro
In a somewhat similar fashion to Ironton, Washington didn’t have many offensive plays. But it didn’t need to. The Blue Lions possessed the ball for less than 12 minutes all night, yet still racked up 40-plus points again. Is there any team who can even slow down this offense? It’s a well-oiled machine.
6. Unioto (6-0)
Last Week: 6 … —
Week 6 Result: 42-0 win over Adena
The Shermans made sure they weren’t going to be caught looking ahead, dispatching Adena with relative ease. We’re not sure if anyone is paying attention or not, but Newton Hoops is playing great football under center. That trend will need to continue as they enter enemy territory for the game they’ve been waiting for all season — an undefeated showdown against Zane Trace.
7. Zane Trace (6-0)
Last Week: 9 … +2
Week 6 Result: 48-0 win over Westfall
Much like its SVC rival, Zane Trace wasn’t going to get caught looking ahead, either. Needless to say, the Pioneers are ready for a battle with Unioto. The winner moves one step closer to the SVC title. Something is going to have to give. Either Carter Langley will make some big-time throws, or Zane Trace’s defense will make this a low-scoring contest.
8. West (5-1)
Last Week: 8 .. —
Week 6 Result: 49-42 win over Waverly
Survival. That was the name of the game for the Senators as they managed to outscore Waverly in a shootout. However, what Waverly did was provide a blueprint for a way to beat the Senators. But still, good luck stopping this offense, which can put up points in bunches. Additionally, that’s five straight victories and they aim for six against Minford.
9. Gallia Academy (6-0)
Last Week: N/A
Week 6 Result: 43-35 win over Fairland
Hello, Gallia Academy and welcome to Power Rankings. Is it possible that the OVC is the deepest conference in Southern Ohio? Ironton, Galla Academy, Fairland and Coal Grove all have winning resumes and at least four wins on the season. This Blue Devil team has some guys on the team that are straight up dudes. Keep on eye on this team.
10. Logan Elm (5-1)
Last Week: N/A
Week 6 Result: 35-14 win over Fairfield Union
I have no idea how long Blayton Reid can keep running the ball at this pace, but it’s fun to see his eye-popping stat line after each game. And his latest performance put him in Logan Elm’s history books for rushing yards in a game. Meanwhile, this team is playing opportunistic football and taking advantage of other team’s miscues.
