Notre Dame’s Ava Hassel wins The UPS Store’s SOC Athlete of the Week award

Hassel leads the Titans in scoring during a 6-0 start to the season.

SOSA Staff Report

PORTSMOUTH — If you’ve seen Ava Hassel with a basketball in her hands, you know only good things happen next.

Notre Dame’s talented point guard has led the Titans to a 6-0 start alongside a 4-0 mark in the Southern Ohio Conference I. Last week, she scored 22 points in a win over Huntington and followed that performance up with 13 and 17-point outings in victories over Symmes Valley and Ironton St. Joe.

For those efforts, Hassel is SOSA’s 13th overall SOC Athlete of the Week, presented by The UPS Store.

New Boston’s Lexus Oiler actually won the popular vote. Out of 791 public votes, Oiler accounted for 546 or 69 percent of the total. Wheelersburg’s Alaina Keeney finished second in the voting with 167, Hassel was third with a count of 35, Clay’s Evan Woods was fourth at 26, and Green’s Gage Sampson came in fifth with 17.

While Oiler won the popular vote, Hassel received three of the four votes from the guys at SOSA to win the award.

For her efforts, Hassel will receive a free t-shirt from The UPS Store, as well as meal coupons from the Schmidt Family Restaurant Group.
