NOTRE DAME 46, SOUTH WEBSTER 44

After trailing for the better part of three quarters Saturday evening, Notre Dame (1-0) rallied to beat South Webster (0-1).

Heading into the fourth quarter tied 31-31, the Titans took a 42-37 lead thanks to seven consecutive points from guard Ava Hassel. The junior enjoyed a stretch where she hit a 3-point field goal and finished two impressive drives to the bucket.

From there, Notre Dame clung to the lead for a season-opening win.

“South Webster is a really good team. We prepared for them all week,” Hassel said. “We went to our zone defense in the second half and that seemed to save us. We were just rushing way too much in the first half. So we stayed patient and played like we know how to play.”

Hassel led the Titans with 24 points while Isabel Cassidy finished with 10 and three assists. Taylor Schmidt also helped out, scoring six points and grabbing a team-high five rebounds.

For the Jeeps, Bri Claxon led the way with 19 points while Faith Maloney had eight and a game-high 13 rebounds. Rose Stephens also reached double-digit scoring with 10 points.

Notre Dame will get back to action after a lengthy break on Dec. 2, traveling to Western. South Webster will look for its first win on Monday, hosting Valley.

“We just have to work at it everyday,” Hassel said. “We know that we’re going to be in a lot of close games this year. We have to get used to it. So we just have to come out every night and fight.”
