WHEELERSBURG — For the second straight week, a Wheelersburg Pirate has taken home SOSA’s “Athlete of the Week” honors.

Last week, it was quarterback Evan Horsley. This week’s, it’s All-Ohio goalkeeper Morgan Bivens. While the Pirates fell to Fairfield Union in a sectional final, it was Bivens’ performance in a sectional semifinal that gave her the nod.

In a 4-3 win in penalty kicks, Bivens held Athens scoreless for 110 minutes of action on Oct. 16. It was Bivens’ 10th shutout of the year and the 40th of her career, tied for 10th most all-time in OHSAA history.

Out of 3,775 public votes, Bivens accounted for 1,774 or 47 percent of the total. Jackson’s Collin Ghearing finished second in the voting with 1,340, Unioto’s Autumn Stanger was third with a count of 257, Southeastern’s Skylar Hice was fourth at 210, and Piketon’s Levi Gullion came in fifth with 194.

Bivens received two of the four votes from the guys at SOSA as well.
