McDERMOTT — After aiding Northwest to one of the program’s most important wins in its history, Mohawks junior Ellie Curtis has been voted as Southern Ohio Sports Authority’s “Athlete of the Week.”

On Aug. 21, in a 4-0 win over Piketon, Curtis scored three goals to nail down her first career hat trick. After teammate Eva Reyes started the scoring just minutes into the game, Curtis found the back of the net twice in the first half (23:54 and 21:50) and once in the second half (39:36).

The victory was the Mohawks’ first season-opening win in program history.

Out of 7,404 public votes, Curtis accounted for 3,757 or 50.7 percent of the total. Unioto’s Amber Cottrill finished second in the voting with 3,006, Waverly’s Loren Moran was third with a count of 285, Paint Valley’s Olivia Smith was fourth at 191, and Huntington’s trio of Sydney Reed, Sami Reed and Cindy Hopkins came in fifth with 165.

Curtis received three of the four votes from the guys at SOSA as well.

For her efforts, Curtis will receive a free duffel bag from MOJO-USA, a free t-shirt thanks to Mile Tree Screen Printing and a free Wendy’s combo meal via Schmidt Family Restaurant Group.
