ATHENS — With three straight victories Saturday morning, Huntington’s volleyball program took home the Athens Invitational title.
The Huntsmen (4-0) beat Eastern Meigs in two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-16, took two of three from host Athens, 25-11, 23-25 and 25-15, and beat Waterford in the event’s championship in a 25-18, 25-23 sweep.
The three victories came after Huntington’s season-opening five-set win over North Adams on Wednesday — 28-26, 19-25, 21-25, 25-19 and 19-17.
Saturday, sophomore Allison Basye tallied 44 kills … yes, we’re serious, seven aces and 10 digs while Megan Steele added 25 kills, six aces and 16 digs.
“Megan is an all-around great volleyball player. She’s a solid back row passer with high percentages to the target. She’s very successful hitting in both the front and back rows,” Huntington coach Tina Magill said. “Allison has came a long way since last year. She has 67 kills in the first four games. She’s seeing the floor well, has a dominant hit and a gentle touch on her tips. That makes it hard for the opponent to cover the floor.”
Following Basye and Steele’s performances, Alyssa Steele passed out 64 assists alongside seven aces and 18 digs, Harmony Henneberger had 23 digs and four aces, and Lauryl Shope logged 13 digs and four aces.
Huntington is back in action Tuesday evening, hosting Piketon to begin Scioto Valley Conference play.
