LEGION BASEBALL: Portsmouth 23 takes advantage of Chillicothe 757’s defensive miscues in win

Portsmouth 23 took advantage of three defensive miscues to hand Chillicothe 757 a loss Tuesday night.

SOSA Staff Report

PORTSMOUTH — Out of five runs Chillicothe Post 757 surrendered Tuesday night, four were unearned. That’s never a good recipe to win a ballgame.

The Colts (8-14) fell to Portsmouth 23 on the road by a 5-4 final, a game where Harley Patterson gave his best effort on the mound. Patterson tossed 6 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and striking out 10 hitters.

But his defense couldn’t make the plays when it counted the most.

“Harley pitched great,” 757 coach Tom Barr said. “Our defense gave four unearned runs in the loss.”

Put simply, that’s just about the entire storyline.

757 took a 3-0 lead after two innings and a 4-2 edge into the sixth. But Portsmouth 23 (7-11) took advantage of the aforementioned miscues, scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh to walk-off a winner.

Darius Jordan led Portsmouth’s offense, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base, a run scored and two RBIs while Dakota Dodds and Ethan Lauder each knocked in a run.

On the mound, Lauder picked up the victory in three innings of relief work. The Minford product didn’t allow a run and gave up just three base hits.

For 757, Trey Carter was 3-for-5 at the dish with a home run and two runs scored. Caleb Foglesong finished 2-for-3 with a run, Connor Mullins was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Chad Ison was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday evening as Portsmouth travels to Chillicothe’s Hoffman Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
