SOSA Staff Report

BECKLEY, W. Va. — After 9-5 and 5-0 wins over Terre Haute to end their weekend slate, the Chillicothe Paints won their third straight game Monday.

Competing at Linda K. Epling Stadium, the Paints (18-11) handed the West Virginia Miners a 5-3 loss … using a three-run first inning to grab momentum and do so.

Right off the bat, Trey Smith (University of Indianapolis) doubled to knock in Gavin Homer (Penn State). Smith later scored, as well as Cole Andrews (Miami), on a two-run single from Collin Luty (Northern Kentucky), which gave Chillicothe an early 3-0 advantage.

In the third, Smith knocked in his 23rd RBI this summer, singling to bring in Andrews and give the Paints a 4-0 lead.

West Virginia (8-21) cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the third before shaving it to a single run in the fifth. But that was as close as they’d get.

The Paints scored the game’s final run in the seventh, coming on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Justin McIntyre (Western Michigan).

Smith and Luty led Chillicothe’s offense, both finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Andrews was 3-for-3 on the evening alongside two runs.

On the hill, Mitch Milheim (3-1, Ohio State) picked up the win in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Milheim allowed an earned on two hits and struck out four. Chillicothe’s starter, Nicholas Smith (Baldwin Wallace), tossed three innings and surrendered two runs on a hit and four walks.

The Paints are back in action Tuesday evening, hosting West Virginia at VA Memorial Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
