Adena’s Sykes leads area Division VI, VII All-Ohio football selections

The OPSWA released their Division VI and VII All-Ohio football teams on Monday.

COLUMBUS — The postseason honors continued to roll in for Adena’s Preston Sykes on Monday when the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association released its Division VI and VII All-Ohio football teams.

The Warriors’ quarterback and defensive back was named a first-team All-Ohioan in Division VI after earning a Division VI District Defensive Player of the Year honor.

Sykes was magnificent, both offensively and defensively, leading the Warriors to an 8-1 finish alongside 49 tackles, three for a loss, five interceptions and two scores.

Adena coach John Penwell also earned a top honor. He was named the Division VI Coach of the Year.

Sykes’ teammate Nate Throckmorton, a running back who rushed for 937 yards this season, was a second-team all-state honoree, as was Paint Valley’s Tramel Byrd, who led the SVC in rushing with 1,290 yards on the ground.

Earning third-team honors is Valley’s Ty Perkins, a sophomore who helped the Indians win two postseason contests.

Paint Valley’s Cavan Cooper and Nick Mills, Southeastern’s Mikey Nusser, Adena’s Logan Bennett, Valley’s Nick Bowles and Devin Wiley, Symmes Valley’s Levi Niece, Luke Leith and Eli Patterson, Paint Valley’s Cordell Grubb, and Adena’s Kole Williams and Eric Hurtt are all honorable mention All-Ohioans.

In Division VII, Eastern’s Dillion Mattox is a second-team All-Ohio selection. Mattox led the Eagles to a 5-3 mark and posted 1,179 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.

Notre Dame’s Logan Emnett and Carter Campbell, Green’s Ethan Huffman, and Eastern’s Kyle Beasley and Logan Clemmons were honorable mention selections.
